Moon, Loyd

Retired missionary and Alabama pastor Loyd Moon died March 28. He was 83.

A graduate of Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., Moon served alongside his wife, Mary Hazel, as a missionary in Brazil from 1951 until 1989. After their return, the couple continued work in Brazil through short-term missions trips, and he served as pastor of rural churches in Alabama, Indiana and Kentucky.

Moon also served as interim pastor of First Baptist Church, Florence, and First Baptist Church, Guntersville, in the early 1990s, as well as a supply pastor for several churches in Alabama and Tennessee. After Mary Hazel passed away, Moon remarried in 1996, and he and his wife, Judith, were appointed by the International Mission Board to serve as missions consultants in Alabama with the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions.

Moon and Mary Hazel had three sons, all of whom were born in Brazil.

“They (Loyd and Mary Hazel Moon) left a beautiful legacy,” Judith Moon said. (TAB)
