Maxine Mooney served alongside her husband, James, in ministry for more than 50 years, working as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School volunteer and Woman’s Missionary Union leader. Upon James’ retirement in 1989, the two returned to Concord Baptist Church, Salem, where he had previously served as pastor for 13 years. There, Maxine has continued her ministry, working as a Sunday School teacher.
Q: How did you come to know God?
A: I grew up in a Christian home and attended church regularly, but when I was 17, I felt an overwhelming conviction to draw closer to God.
Q: How were you involved in church through the years?
A: As a pastor’s wife, I have done a little of everything.
Q: What did you get from ministry?
A: As a Sunday School teacher, I’ve learned that the teacher almost always learns more than the pupils. I find there are always truths I haven’t learned yet.
Q: What have been some of the demands of the ministry?
A: I’ve always been happy to do the things I have done. But a lot of them are expected being a pastor’s wife, so that can sometimes be a demand. But I’ve always enjoyed them.
Q: How do you see yourself involved in church in the future?
A: I hope to continue to teach my Sunday School class. I probably won’t do as much as I used to, but I want to continue as I am now.
Q: What difference has being a Christian made in your life?
A: It started out with the assurance and confidence in the Lord that all will be well. So that has given me the confidence to work hard. It’s made all the difference in my life.
