NEW YORK, N.Y. — An overwhelming majority of Americans believe schools should install filters to keep students from seeing pornography and hate speech on school Internet terminals, according to a survey commissioned by the Digital Media Forum.
The survey of 1,900 people found that 92 percent support filtering of pornography on school computers, and 79 percent support the use of filters to block hate speech.
The study was conducted by Dhavan Shah, assistant professor of journalism and mass communications at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, who explained, “It’s not perceived as censorship, but rather a protection, or barrier.”
