In a sanctuary full of memories, friends and members of Mulga Baptist Church, Birmingham Association, celebrated its 80th anniversary and ground breaking Dec. 9 with about 200 attendance.
“It was a wonderful service,” said Pastor John Price. “We had the sanctuary decorated for Christmas, and instead of the regular ornaments, we had a tree of remembrance.”
Price said church members had decorated the tree with mementos from former years of the church’s service, including gifts made for Sunday School teachers, newspaper articles about the church and pictures of old Sunday School classes and the building before it was bricked. Speakers at the event included Frances Hamilton, president of the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission, who spoke about the history of the church, and Ricky Creech, director of missions for Birmingham Association, who brought the message. “We combined the groundbreaking and anniversary services so former members and friends could come back and see both. We had one of the charter members’ sons come back and speak about what he remembers about the church,” Price said. Price reported that the family of a semi-retired contractor recently joined the church and allowed the church to do what would normally be beyond its financial capabilities. (TAB)
