Robert Frederick “Rob” Murray, recreational ministry director for Valleydale Baptist Church, Birmingham, died Aug. 13. He was 56.
Murray graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg and was a member of Valleydale Baptist for 10 years before joining the staff.
According to Senior Pastor Calvin Kelly, Murray’s “temporary position” at the church quickly became permanent. After giving up a career in sales with the goal of returning to school to be a teacher, he took the recreational ministry position while he prepared for his new career. However, his love for the church spurred him to continue in the staff position.
Kelly said Murray easily won the hearts of everyone at Valleydale, working with all ages through the recreation ministry.
“He was a valued leader in our drama ministry, resident comedian and team player,” Kelly said.
“I’ve never had a staff member more beloved by the whole church, more encouraging to me personally or more devoted to the entire ministry and vision of Valleydale.
“He has left a huge gaping hole, not only in our church family but also in our hearts,” Kelly added.
“He will be missed more than I can describe.”
Murray is survived by his wife of 28 years, Diane, and one son. (TAB)
