Musical duo finds new ways to share gospel through songs

The musical duo Shane and Shane share the same first name and same desire to see lives radically transformed by the gospel.

As Shane Barnard and Shane Everett lead worship for events around the country, they want to proclaim the greatness of God through music.

“I think that anything we have ever done with our music and anything we will ever do centers around new ways to share the gospel of grace,” Barnard said. “That’s the only thing we have to offer. It’s the desire of our hearts and why we continue to write songs, so that people would know the reality of the gospel. When you’re talking about the power of God, which can completely transform someone’s life and give them a clean heart, that’s what we want to proclaim.”

In addition to leading worship, Barnard and Everett are committed to teaching a weekly songwriting class where they address the principles of songwriting and theology. Each week, they challenge students to write a song based on how the Lord is working in their lives.

“Since the students have to do this assignment, I am tackling it as well,” Barnard said.

“It brings accountability to stay in the Word and to write songs from a fresh perspective,” he said. “I’m wanting them to understand the reality of the gospel and live in the freedom of the gospel.”

With songs that were inspired from this class, their latest album, “Bring Your Nothing,” features songs about forgiveness, repentance and praising God in the midst of trials.

“These songs were inspired by real life and hard circumstances,” Barnard said. “In the midst of these trials, the Word of God is so alive and active. There is something powerful about how God combines music and His Word. We have a lot of testimonies of God’s Word making its way into the hearts of His people through these songs.

“The album ends with a song called, ‘Though You Slay Me,’ which is based on Job 13:15: ‘Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him; I will surely defend my ways to His face.’ One of our friends was actually going through a horrible, hopeless situation. He was about to have the bottom half of his body amputated because of an infection that was spreading throughout his body. We spent a long time in prayer with him. At the end of the night, my friend landed on this verse. His family had a peaceful weekend proclaiming that no matter what, they would still worship the name of Jesus. On Monday morning, they found out the infection was completely gone. That’s the power of God right there.

“The reality behind these songs is that our God is able to save us from the fiery furnace, but even if He doesn’t, we’re still going to trust Him because He is good.”
