MAYUGE DISTRICT, Uganda — A young mother was beaten and stabbed by her husband on Easter Sunday after he learned she had become a Christian.
Zaina Gimbo, 26, of Sirinya B Island in Lake Victoria, Uganda, put her faith in Christ on April 2, Morning Star News reported.
Gimbo became a Christian after hearing about Christ from a businesswoman who would purchase fish from her and her Muslim husband, Jamiru Mwima.
On April 17, when Mwima went on a commercial fishing trip, Gimbo secretly attended an Easter church service. Afterward she returned home singing Christian songs and carrying a Bible, unaware that her husband had come back early from fishing, Morning Star News stated.
Furious at learning Gimbo had become a Christian, Mwima beat and stabbed her until she lost consciousness.
Christian friends took her to a hospital in Bwondha and police were notified, but Mwima disappeared before they could respond.
Approximately 12% of Uganda’s population is Muslim. Uganda’s constitution and laws allow for freedom of religion, including converting from one faith to another. However, Christian churches increasingly have received threats of violence, and some Christian converts have been attacked, killed or excommunicated by Muslim family members, the World Atlas reported.
