JIGAWA, Nigeria — Mobs of Muslim fundamentalists rampaged through the town of Kazaure in the northern state of Jigawa, Nigeria, on Nov. 19, burning 11 churches to the ground and destroying Christian homes and businesses.
Thousands of Christians have been displaced as a result of the attack, and a Catholic priest has not been seen since the violence erupted.
“We have arrested at least nine suspects and we are sure of using them to get at their leaders,” stated Jigawa Police Commissioner Alhaji Abubakar Saleh following the attacks. “We will interrogate any Muslim leader name.”
Peter Jatau, archbishop of Kaduna, revealed that his diocese has spent about $180,000 to provide relief aid to families displaced by Muslim aggression.
“Unless the Nigerian government makes decisive strides toward curtailing the pandemic nature of religious violence as is being perpetrated by Muslim fundamentalists, this country might be heading for the precipice,” Jatau said.
