Close to 2.5 million pilgrims were expected to visit Saudi Arabia this week as Muslims observe the hajj in Mecca.
The annual Muslim pilgrimage in required at least once in the lifetime of every Muslim who is able physically and financially to perform it.
The hajj peaked March 4 when pilgrims gathered and spent the night at Mount Arafat, which is 12 miles from Mecca. Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammad gave his last sermon at that location at Mount Arafat 14 centuries ago.
Other rituals were performed Monday through Wednesday. Outside Mecca, pilgrims threw stones at two pillars that symbolize the devil.
They also circled the cubic black stone called the Kaaba and recited from the Koran, the Muslim holy book. (RNS)
