OMAHA, Neb. — Gambling opponents in Nebraska are betting that new links forged with the religious community will help them defeat plans for expanded games of chance expected to appear on the November ballot.
Pat Loontjer, who leads Gambling with the Good Life, was happy to welcome a coalition of religious leaders from nearly all major denominations.
The church leaders met July 22 in Omaha.
“We can’t contact thousands of people, but they can,” Loontjer said of the churches. “This will be a big, big part of our effort.”
Two gambling measures are expected on the ballot. One would allow two casinos anywhere in the state.
The other would legalize two casinos in Omaha and open the door for 4,900 slot machines and video gambling machines in bars, restaurants and horse tracks.
