Judson College Artist in Residence Billie Jean Young has published a 203-page collection of letters from her mother in a volume titled “Now, How You Do? A Memoir.”
The correspondence of Susie M. Young, now 90, offers insight into the lives of blacks in Alabama’s Black Belt region a generation ago.
“I planned this book many years ago,” Billie Jean Young said. “I always knew what Mama had to say was important, and her letters were always precious to me.”
The letters tell of Susie M. Young’s struggles in raising her seven children, handling money, taking care of farm business and seeking proper health care all by herself following her husband’s death.
The book is available online from Amazon and Barnes & Noble and through local booksellers. For more information, visit www.billiejeanyoung.org.
