KAMPALA, Uganda — A Ugandan man who put his faith in Jesus at a New Year’s Eve church service suffered quickly for his decision.
Tambuze Marijani, formerly a Muslim, put his faith in Jesus during a church service in the Bugweri District of Uganda, reports Morning Star News. Fourteen other individuals also put their faith in Jesus during that service, the church’s pastor said.
Family response
Upon returning home Jan. 1 to Nangi village in Mayuge District, Marijani told his wife about becoming a Christian.
Upset, his wife gave him an Islamic divorce letter Jan. 3. Then, along with Marijani’s brothers and other relatives, Marijani’s wife began to dismantle the house Jan. 4. The brothers also beat Marijani for leaving Islam.
Marijani suffered a broken leg and other injuries, which required almost two weeks of hospitalization, states Morning Star.
His former wife and their four children are now with relatives, and Marijani indicated he has no access to them.
Remains in hiding
Since his hospital discharge Jan. 16, Marijani has been in hiding.
Uganda’s constitution and laws allow for freedom of religion, including converting from one faith to another. However, Christian churches increasingly have received threats of violence, and some Christian converts have been attacked, killed or excommunicated, the World Atlas reports.
