Active Southern Baptist missionaries now have extra incentive to pursue higher education as New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary have recently announced new scholarship programs for missions personnel.
New Orleans
New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and Leavell College recently announced an increase in the missionary scholarship for active International Mission Board personnel and returning International Service Corps personnel and Journeyman missionaries to cover 75% of tuition and fee costs.
Effective immediately, the scholarship increase applies to all undergraduate degree programs, a first master’s degree or a doctoral degree for qualifying IMB, ISC and Journeyman applicants, the seminary announced.
“Supporting the work of the IMB is an absolute top priority for us here at NOBTS,” said Jamie Dew, NOBTS president. “We want to do everything possible to create pipelines for our mission board and to equip our current and future missionaries for successful work overseas,” Dew said. “We look forward to a day when NOBTS is sending hundreds of her graduates overseas.”
Remaining in place are the NOBTS and Leavell College scholarship program that covers 100% of tuition and fees for children of current IMB or North American Mission Board missionaries and other scholarships for NAMB personnel.
Southwestern
Calling it a “historic new initiative,” Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary President Adam W. Greenway announced in a video released Aug. 11 that beginning with the fall 2022 semester, SWBTS will provide a full tuition scholarship to all International Mission Board missionaries enrolled in the seminary’s master’s degrees and doctoral programs.
“Our mission is to penetrate the darkness of lostness around the globe with the light of the gospel, and we are committed to lowering financial barriers to that service while providing the very best theological education to prepare you to live your calling for more faithful service,” Greenway said.
“We believe that those of you who have given your lives to serving on the frontlines around the world,” he noted, “are worthy of this type of investment on our part so that you may, indeed, fulfill your calling.”
Greenway also announced students who are current IMB applicants who have yet to receive appointments will have 100% of their tuition covered for a 36-hour master of theological studies degree, which meets the missions board’s theological education requirements for missionary appointment.
