Let’s start by saying this is NOT your typical modern contemporary Christian record. Canadian band “Newworldson” are well known for their eclectic style, a combination of pop, gospel, R&B and soul, a thoroughly retro sound that at times can sound like the best of Paul Simon, Aaron Neville, Robert Parker or (insert your favorite ’60s group here). It’s always fresh, always retro, always toe-tapping, always good music. Yep, it’s that wide open.

Featuring the critically acclaimed Chops Horns (Alicia Keys, The Police, Rolling Stones), this is music that I can get my teeth into. I’ve always loved horn-based rock, and while you can’t really call much of this rock, the gospel and soul sounds will have you re-living the best of ’60s music, only with uplifting, Christ-centric lyrics. I haven’t been this excited about a record in a long time.

For me, it’s tough to pick the record’s best, so we’ll look to what’s making waves in the radio world. “Learning to Be the Light” is currently No. 6 on Billboard’s Christian Songs Chart and is certainly among the best on the record. “Old Time Religion” and “Son of Man” are showcased on the record and are great songs. Just know that, if you like eclectic, retro, R&B and soul, you’re going to love everything on this CD. Finally, uplifting Christian music for those of us who loved ’60s R&B!
