Since criminal activity has become a problem at Houston County’s adult entertainment facilities, Alabama legislators passed two bills during the recent special session to help law enforcement protect “the public welfare, health, peace and morals.”
Sponsored by Sen. Harri Anne Smith, R-Slocomb, and Reps. Benjamin Lewis, R-Dothan; Steve Clouse, R-Ozark; and Warren Beck, R-Geneva, the bills prevent alcohol sales and consumption in topless-, exotic- or bikini-dancing establishments looking to open in the county in the future. Existing establishments will not be affected, assuming they adhere to specific requirements concerning changes to their businesses.
When signed into law by the governor, adult entertainment facilities will not be allowed to sell alcoholic beverages or open “within 500 feet of an establishment dealing in or permitting the consumption of alcoholic beverages.”
According to the Dothan Eagle, “the sheriff’s office has responded to 229 calls … at … topless and bikini clubs in the past year.”
