NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary professor Jimmy Dukes and his wife, Retia, were struck by a vehicle April 4 as they crossed the street from the seminary’s main campus in New Orleans to the school’s Providence Guest House. Both are being treated at University Hospital in New Orleans.
Jimmy Dukes received multiple fractures and injuries — two broken legs, a broken arm, a cracked vertebra and a punctured lung. His humorous and ulna (in the wrist) were surgically repaired, and his left arm is on its way to recovery. At press time, the family was anticipating a move out of the intensive care unit soon.
Retia Dukes experienced head trauma in the accident and has swelling around the brain. Upon arrival at the hospital, she underwent surgery for a brain hemorrhage. She remains unresponsive and in critical condition though minor progression is visible.
