North American Mission Board appoints six missionaries with Alabama ties

Six missionaries with ties to Alabama have been appointed by the North American Mission Board (NAMB).

Cary S. Hanks Jr. and C. Anne Hanks serve in Indianapolis, Ind., where Cary is a church planting missionary.

Cary, an Alabama native, is a graduate of Samford University and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, where he received master’s and doctoral degrees. The couple previously served 15 years as missionaries with the International Mission Board (IMB). Earlier Cary served as pastor of churches in Monroe County (Ala.) and Walnut Hill, Fla.

Anne Hanks is also an Alabama native and Samford University graduate. Before her IMB missions experience, she worked for New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary as a secretary and preschool teacher/assistant director.

The couple has two children: Kara, 23, and Jeremy, 17.

Chun Woo “John” and June A. Yi serve in Huntsville, where John Yi is a church planting missionary.

John, a native of Korea, is a graduate of Teague Bible College, Denver Conservative Baptist Seminary, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Luther Rice Seminary, where he received the doctor of ministry degree. He has served as a language missions consultant for the Georgia Baptist Convention and pastor of International Baptist Mission in Atlanta since 2000. Earlier he served as an associate of Asian Church Planting for NAMB, an Asian church planting missionary in Atlanta and founder/pastor of churches in Tulsa, Okla.; Irving, Texas, and Broomfield, Colo. He also served as youth minister of churches in Denver, Colo., and Dongmyang, Korea.

June Yi, also a native of Korea, is a graduate of Teague Nursing College and Luther Rice Seminary, where she received the master of education degree. She has served churches as a pastor’s wife since 1984 and earlier was a high school teacher.

The Yis have two children: Samuel, 20, and Grace, 19.

Two other missionaries were appointed under the US/C-2 program, in which young adults complete two years of mission service in the United States or Canada.

Leslie A. Parvin serves in Portland, Maine, as a collegiate evangelism missionary.

Parvin, an Alabama native, is a graduate of Samford University and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. She has previously served as an M-Fuge camp director, Baptist Campus Ministries director at the seminary, youth Bible study leader for M-Fuge, youth intern, Christian school music teacher, semester missionary/BSU intern, children’s music coordinator, substitute schoolteacher and summer missionary. She is a member of First Baptist Church of Milan, Tenn.

Lena Plunk serves in Harrisburg, Penn., where she develops the Web site for the Baptist Convention of Pennsylvania/South Jersey and serves as an Internet consultant for churches within the convention.

Plunk, who considers Florence her hometown, is a graduate of Blue Mountain (Miss.) College. She previously has been a day camp worker and child care provider. She also served as a summer missionary in Taiwan and Tucson, Ariz., and participated in a missions trip to the Ukraine. (NAMB)
