For church historian Shelton Phillips the 175-year anniversary of Hebron Baptist Church, Ohatchee, was more of a homecoming and family reunion.
Phillips has been a member of the Calhoun Baptist Association church since 1952 and his father had been a member for 97 years at the time of his passing.
Phillips said there were about 60 people in attendance at the 11 a.m. service, fellowship lunch and afternoon concert with the Centennials from Etowah County.
Phillips also presented a church history report during the morning service and Lonette Berg, executive director of the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission, presented the church with a certificate.
Pastor Jason Markham shared a message titled “A Gathering Home” and said he hopes the younger generation “will come to the church and take up where the older generations have left off.”
To reach younger generations Hebron Baptist recently started a puppet ministry called Noah’s Park on Wednesday nights to “show love to the community” and get “more youth involved,” Markham explained.
