One Year Alone With God: 366 Devotions on the Names of God

Ava Pennington. Grand Rapids, Mich.: Revell, 2010. 382 pp. (Hardback).

There has been a renewed emphasis the last few years on the names of God. We have learned to recognize Him as El Shaddai, Elohim, Jehovah Nissi and Jehovah Jireh, as well as other names that address different facets of God’s nature.

In this book, Ava Pennington has taken 122 names and attributes of God and written three devotions on each. The devotions have a distinct pattern: for each name, the first devotion leads the reader to look up and discover why God describes Himself with this term; the second, to look inward to see how this attribute applies to us and the third, to look outward to learn how we should relate to others. Each devotion is based on a Scripture and includes a question to ponder.

Although this is Pennington’s first book, she has been a contributor for many books, including the “Chicken Soup” and “A Cup of Comfort” series, and has written for a number of magazines.
