Rusty Sowell recently celebrated 40 years as pastor of Providence Baptist Church, Opelika. He previously served as pastor of Mount Sterling Baptist Church, Butler, and Garden City First Baptist Church.
Sowell holds an associate’s degree from the former Clarke College, Newton, Mississippi; a bachelor’s degree in biblical studies from Mobile College (now University of Mobile); a master of divinity degree in New Testament and pastoral ministry from New Orleans Seminary; and a doctor of ministry degree from Drew University, Madison, New Jersey.
During the special service recognizing Sowell, Rick Lance made a presentation on behalf of the State Board of Missions. Lance, SBOM executive director, and Sowell have been friends since they served as pastors in Cullman County in 1980.
Sowell’s parents also attended the service, as did his wife, Gina, their two children and two grandchildren. Many past and current church members shared and gave gifts and cards. A luncheon was held after church to honor the Sowells and their years of faithful ministry.
