Oxford’s Lakeview Baptist pastor Starling retires

Jerry Starling, pastor of Lakeview Baptist Church, Oxford, retired effective Sept. 30.

Starling, who was pastor of the Calhoun Baptist Association church for just shy of 23 years, said, “It seemed like a good idea for me personally … I also felt it was the right time for the church.”

Starling came to Lakeview Baptist from First Baptist Church, Hokes Bluff, in October 1990. At the time the church had about 140 in Sunday School, Starling said. Over the course of his ministry the church more than doubled in size, to where a Sunday morning service would see 350–400 people.

Gary Sparks, chairman of deacons for Lakeview, said the church also built a family life center and new education space and renovated the sanctuary twice during Starling’s tenure.

More than the buildings, though, Sparks said, Starling has been known for his evangelistic-mindedness. Even in his last months as pastor Starling was out making evangelistic visits and leading a FAITH Evangelism semester course from LifeWay Christian Resources.

“He retired Sept. 30 and he was back in the office Oct. 1,” Sparks laughed.

Starling’s last service was more of “a celebration” than anything else, Sparks said. Music for the morning service included some of Starling’s favorite songs, including “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Come, Now is the Time to Worship.” Starling conducted a service of the Lord’s Supper; he then shared how it is a reminder of the cost of salvation and how it brings sinners into the family of God.

After the service the church held a lunch and then another service honoring Starling. A member of the pulpit committee that recommended Starling spoke about how they came to the conclusion to call him to Lakeview, and several others — including Sparks — spoke about how God had used Starling to influence them.

“He has been a mentor, a friend,” Sparks said. “He’s counseled me … he’s been there for me.”

Starling plans to relax for the remainder of 2012, he said. He will continue teaching Sunday School and the FAITH course. Beginning in 2013 he plans to serve in interim or supply preaching roles as needed.
