SCRANTON, Pa. — An atheist group’s complaint recently brought an end to a Pennsylvania high school football coach’s 30-year tradition of praying with his team before games.
The Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation, an atheist legal group, filed a complaint with the school district in June, claiming to be speaking on behalf of a local resident, according to The Christian Post. The group claimed that Jack Henzes, head football coach of the Dunmore High School Bucks, effectively endorses religion “on the district’s behalf” when he “organizes, leads or participates in team prayer.”
Dunmore Superintendent John Marichak replied to the group’s complaint in an Oct. 31 letter: “We directed Coach Henzes to be sure that he should not partake in any such behavior,” he wrote, according to the Scranton Times-Tribune. (TAB)
