Barbara Cross, whose father, John, was the pastor of 16th Street Baptist Church when it was bombed on Sept. 15, 1963, said the trauma of that terrible day had an effect on her family but taught her important lessons too.
Semmes First Baptist Church was founded in 1872 — the first recorded church in the city — and the church recently erected a new historical marker to share its story.
