RALEIGH, N.C. — The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is suing a North Carolina newspaper for firing a former homosexual.
Tim Wilkins, who worked at the Raleigh News and Observer as a direct marketing supervisor, was featured in a front-page story in the paper in August 1997. In the story he proclaimed his belief that homosexuality is a sin and that homosexuals can change through Jesus Christ.
Wilkins, who is a former homosexual, said his work environment turned hostile immediately after the story ran. He was suspended less than three weeks later, then fired.
He had received high ratings on an annual job review less than two months before he was dismissed. The case is believed to be the first involving a former homosexual who was fired because of his religious beliefs.
