Pastor in India tied, beaten by police, others

AMBOJIPETA, India — Police officers and members of a Hindu extremist group in India’s Andhra Pradesh state lured a pastor into a remote forest March 11, where the extremists tied his hands and feet and beat him with wooden clubs as they accused him of offering money for Hindus to convert to Christianity.

As Pastor Bakhthula Anand, 48, of Bethesida Prayer House in Ambojipeta village, Medak district, was reading the Bible alone in his home adjacent to the church, two policemen came and told him that a police official wanted to meet with him. “As we were walking, a short distance away, a group of around 25 to 30 Hindu extremists belonging to the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) joined them,” Anand said.

When they finished beating Anand, they untied him and left him in the forest at 3 a.m. March 12. He managed to reach home later that morning and was treated for severe swelling and exhaustion.
