Persecution of Thai Christians rises in villages

BANGKOK, Thailand — Christians from the southern province of Attapeu, Laos, have faced increasing persecution recently. However, due to pressure applied by international humanitarian organizations, persecution has shifted from the provincial to the village level.

Christian Solidarity Worldwide has received copies of letters from Christians pleading for help. “I am being threatened, and therefore all of us are to be without our homes and without a way of making any living,” one letter read.

Christians in that village were told at a meeting with village officials Feb. 19 they would face death if they did not either abandon their Christian faith or leave the village.

Compass Direct news service has confirmed that Christians faced fines of 150,000 kip ($14) from village officials. Most villagers grow just enough crops to support their families; few have little income to spare.
