Pine Barren’s Mount Moriah sets homecoming for Oct. 13

Continuing a long established tradition since the 1950s, friends of Pine Barren Association’s Mount Moriah Fellowship Baptist Church are once again sponsoring their annual homecoming celebration Oct. 13.

Always held on the second Sunday of October, this year’s service will feature guest speaker John R. Claypool IV of New Orleans, La.

Claypool, who is a graduate of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., spent the first 30 years of his career as an ordained Southern Baptist minister, serving churches in Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Texas and Mississippi.

He now serves as theologian in residence at Trinity Episcopal Church in New Orleans and is considered one of the premier preachers in America.

Other featured guests will be George M. Farnell of Mobile, who will provide special music for the service, and Nell Luckie of Mount Moriah, who will be the song leader for the daylong event.

The organist for the day will be Mary Ann Ezell of Pine Apple.

The service, which begins at 11 a.m., will be followed by dinner on the grounds.

Each year Mount Moriah distributes scholarship grants to qualifying students.

Last year a decision was made by the scholarship committee to limit the awards to students who are pursuing church vocation careers.

This year’s recipients are Matthew and Elizabeth McCullough of Frisco City.

Mary Alice Carmichael, one of the event’s organizers, said that each year an estimated 250 to 400 people show up from across the state and country.

Most of the attendees are relatives of past members or have some affiliation with the church, she added. Located on the county line between Wilcox and Butler counties on County Road 7, the church turns 174 this year.

Carmichael said anyone who has a connection to the church is invited to attend. For more information, contact Carmichael at 205-879-7849 or Harold Grimes at 334-746-2520.
