Beth Watters was honored recently for her 25 years of service as music minister at Pine Flat Baptist Church, Selma, with a special round of applause, a check of appreciation and a reception in her honor.
Watters, who spends her weekdays teaching music to sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders in the Selma city school system, took an interest in music at an early age, beginning piano lessons in the fourth grade.
After graduating from Judson College in Marion and marrying, Watters began playing piano for the Cahaba Baptist Association church before falling into the role of music minister.
“[Music] was an important part of my life growing up, and I felt it was important to share it with other children and with the church when I could,” she said.
For Bill Bennett, acting deacon chairman, a large portion of his appreciation for Watters is the care she has taken in working and traveling with the youth and children of Pine Flat Baptist, including his daughter.
“There’s a charm about Beth,” he said. “She’s a sweet person and easygoing. It’s been a privilege to work with her here in our church. She’s served faithfully.”
Pastor Michael Brooks echoed that sentiment.
“Beth has been a pleasure to work with,” he said. “She is very dedicated to her ministry and has good ideas to share about blending the music with my sermon topics.”
