Pintlala Baptist Church celebrates golden anniversary

There was a feeling of excitement in the home of Curtis and Katherine Massey on that day in 1960.

It was June 5 and 48 people had gathered to be a part of history — the launching of Pintlala Baptist Church. Bart Kennedy, a student and football player at Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham, delivered the first sermon. It was a celebratory first worship service.

There was a similar atmosphere of excitement 50 years and one day later as members of Pintlala Baptist gathered to celebrate the church’s golden anniversary.

During Jubilee Celebration Day on June 6, Pastor Gary Burton described highlights of the church’s history and those in attendance were invited to sign a banner, which will be on display throughout the 50th anniversary year and will be placed in a time capsule on the 51st anniversary. Montgomery Baptist Association and the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission also presented plaques to the church.

Charter and 50/50 members were recognized during the celebration. The 50/50 concept was developed two years ago by Bev Williams, coordinator of ministries and financial assistant at Pintlala Baptist. She challenged the church to add 50 new members by its 50th anniversary, and the goal was surpassed with 52 new members. Framed photos of each of the 50/50 members were on display at the front of the sanctuary during the service.

While honoring and remembering the past, Burton also encouraged the church to look toward the future. “We are Christians first and Baptists second,” he said. “As we face transition and find a new image, we must never forget our heritage and identity.”
