GUANGZHOU, China — A young Christian mother has been detained by police, allegedly for her efforts in creating an app containing gospel music and sermons, states a prayer letter distributed among house churches in China.
Shandong police reportedly detained the woman — Xin Ruoyu of Guangzhou — and kept her for a month in a “small black room,” states the human rights group ChinaAid. As of Aug. 30, no further information about her situation was known.

She allegedly helped develop the Christian app “Song of Songs.” The app focuses on providing hymns, videos, sermons and sheet music to Chinese-language Christians.
ChinaAid says the government of China has, in the past few years, increased restrictions upon online Christian materials. For example, downloads of Bible apps have been stymied, WeChat accounts about the Bible are blocked and Christian music mostly has been wiped from platforms.
China is No. 19 on Open Doors’ 2024 World Watch List of places most difficult to be a Christian.
