Prison company enlists Christian outreach group

NASHVILLE — A new prison ministry program hopes to change the lives of repeat offenders by teaming one of the nation’s largest private prison owners with a Christian outreach group.

The Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), which operates 64 prisons and jails in 20 U.S. states, recently joined with the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP), a Christian nonprofit that specializes in prison ministry. The two groups developed a program for inmate rehabilitation, designed to improve prisoner behavior and reduce recidivism.

The Institute in Basic Life Principles operates faith-based rehabilitation programs in more than 60 U.S. prisons and jails, and IBLP President Bill Gothard said because of the programs, “Misbehavior during prisoners’ terms is significantly lowered.”

The CCA expects about 1,000 inmates to complete the program this year, though it is still experimental. It will be tested in eight CCA-owned facilities.
