House Bill (HB) 414 isn’t quite ready for its debut.
The bill’s public hearing at the Statehouse has been postponed so it can be cleaned up and certain terms used in it can be defined.
HB 414, sponsored by Rep. Allen Farley, R-McCalla, would make promoting illegal gambling, conspiring to promote illegal gambling, possessing illegal gambling records and possessing more than 10 slot machines or gambling devices a felony.
Currently the penalty is only a misdemeanor, accompanied by a maximum $6,000 fee.
The bill would also allow law enforcement to seize and condemn property being used for illegal gambling and then sell it and keep the proceeds.
