Be a Christian example at church and at school, former University of Alabama quarterback Steadman Shealy told a crowd of Royal Ambassadors (RA) and their supporters Aug. 8. The event, held at First Baptist Church, Jasper, was part of Walker Baptist Association’s weekend celebration to commemorate RAs’ 100-year anniversary.
“When I realized we were approaching 100 years of RAs, it made me realize we needed to do something to celebrate this,” said Greg Thompson, event coordinator and RA director at New Canaan Baptist Church, Jasper. “For something like this to last this long, you know God had to be in it.”
The association’s celebration continued Aug. 9 as about 300 people gathered at Jasper’s Memorial Park for an RA field day competing in several sporting events and pinewood derby races along with other activities.
Thompson credits volunteers from New Canaan Baptist; First, Jasper; Northside Baptist Church, Jasper; Farmstead Baptist Church, Jasper; Eastside Baptist Church, Jasper; New Prospect Baptist Church, Jasper; and Edgil Grove Baptist Church, Jasper, with making the celebration a success.
“We’re trying to teach the boys at a young age the importance of missions and to realize that there are people around the world that don’t have what we have,” he said. “Since this event, I’ve had two different churches in Walker County call asking for information about how to start an RA program.” (TAB)
