RAs schedule soap box derby

It may not be as professional as the Talladega 500 races, but it will be every bit as exciting for Alabama’s Royal Ambassadors (RAs) who participate in the annual Soap Box Derby.

The event will be in Montgomery Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. in front of the state capitol on Dexter Avenue. The Soap Box Derby is sponsored by the State Board of Missions office of men’s ministries.

Participants will include RA divisions of Lad (grades 2-3), Crusader (grades 4-6), Younger Challenger (grades 7-9) and Older Challenger (grades 10-12). There is also a race category for adult counselors.

Rules for car construction include: a limit of $150 in materials; a required braking system; the rider being secured in the car; no propelling systems; and car components being permanently attached. Recycled components are encouraged.

Awards will be given for each grade in the following categories: most attractive car; most unusual car; car speed; car distance and a separate award for adults. Unregistered cars are allowed to enter the race but will not qualify for awards.

To receive a registration packet, call 1-800-264-1225 or e-mail sstephens@alsbom.org. or gburlingame@alsbom.org. Registration deadline is Sept. 9. (TAB)
