Living out Romans 8:28
Three-year-old Jacob DuBois has leukemia. His parents are Lyle and Holly DuBois. His grandparents are Bobby and Connie DuBois and Larry and Mary Wallace. Bobby DuBois serves as associate executive director of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions. Larry Wallace serves as minister of music for Piney Grove Baptist Church, Ardmore. Connie DuBois shared the following during September, which was National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month:
One phone call and three words change our lives — Jacob has leukemia.
These are three words we never thought we would hear but we did.
Jacob was diagnosed in June. By July 25, he was in complete remission. While we celebrate and are grateful to God for the remission, the journey is still long.
This is a roller coaster ride filled with highs and lows.
We have learned a lot of things in the past three months. Some things we didn’t really want to know such as medical terms, what counts means, what it is like to go to clinic every week and so much more.
We also have learned that without faith in God, none of us could get through this.
We continue to be amazed at God’s goodness and His charge over Jacob’s life. And then there are the friends and family members who continue to pray for us, comfort us and support us.
There is no way to thank everyone for each kindness from food to cards to phone calls to posts on social sites, but it is the prayers of the faithful that continue to mean so much to us.
We believe that God hears all of our prayers and has answered them.
The most important thing we have learned is that our faith has been strengthened.
Our walk with God is closer. We have asked, “Why Jacob?,” and the answer is, “Why not, Jacob?”
God can take any situation and use it for good. We have seen that already, and we look forward to seeing what else God has in store for us.
So we wear our orange “Pray for Jacob” bracelets. Our friends and family wear them.
It not only reminds us to pray for him but it also gives us the opportunity to share God’s message with others who ask about the bracelet.

A friend said to me in passing the same week as all the conversations I mentioned in the September Rashional Thoughts — “We never have time to do things right the first time, but we always have time to do them over.”

Thank you, Alabama Baptists, for all your prayers, notes, emails and support as we continue along the cancer journey with Belle. While we are South Carolina Baptists, we feel as if we have been adopted by Alabama Baptists and appreciate you so much. To continue following Belle, visit www.caringbridge.org/visit/bellemitchell or just ask Jennifer (aka Aunt Jen Jen) for an update.

Jennifer, I read your article on health in the Aug. 25 edition. The best diet I know of is the ‘Hallelujah Diet’ at www.hacres.com.
It’s not just a diet but a way of life. You can get a free subscription and free emails. And they have tons of articles on health. The other person to follow on health is any book by Don Colbert.
