‘Regular Baptists’ address child abuse issue

CEDARVILLE, Ohio — The General Association of Regular Baptist Churches has added its voice to other denominations that have recently expressed concern about child abuse.

At their recent annual conference, messengers passed a “Resolution on Child Protection.”

In the statement, they resolved to “acknowledge the past, present and future reality of child abuse in this sin-infiltrated world” and “decry these acts against children as evil and tragic.”

The church members, who passed the resolution during a meeting held June 24–28 in Cedarville, Ohio, called for appropriate discipline and repentance for perpetrators and promotion of healing for victims.

They also resolved to “commit ourselves to implementing safeguards for the protection of children.”

Several denominations have issued statements in the wake of the Catholic Church’s crisis concerning child abuse.

The General Association of Regular Baptist Churches, which has about 92,000 members, was founded in 1932 after withdrawing from a more moderate Baptist convention over doctrinal differences. In a separate resolution about its roots, the delegates said they would continue to “maintain a testimony to the supernaturalism and scriptural base of Christianity as opposed to the anti-supernaturalism and anti-scriptural base of postmodernism.”
