Alabama’s convention became the leading state convention in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) in contributing to missions work through the Cooperative Program (CP) this year.
And John Killian thinks that’s “as significant as it can be.”
Because of that major achievement, Killian will present a resolution at this year’s Alabama Baptist State Convention (ABSC) annual meeting at Whitesburg Baptist Church, Huntsville, Nov. 17–18 to applaud the convention’s CP giving.
“That Alabama Baptists have done so well [with the CP] — that needs to be said,” said Killian, ABSC second vice president and pastor of Maytown Baptist Church in Bessemer Baptist Association.
Rick Lance, executive director of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions, said the state convention’s careful use of CP money is also a reason that the consideration of next year’s budget during the meeting is anything but routine.
“The Alabama Baptist State Convention led the SBC in giving through the Cooperative Program for SBC missions causes in 2008–2009. In fact, almost 10 percent of the SBC CP budget came from Alabama,” Lance said. “Therefore a lot of missions endeavors in Alabama and around the world depend on Alabama Baptists.”
Additional resolutions already planned will
• honor the 400th anniversary of Baptists;
• affirm Great Commission ministries of the state convention and its churches, as well as pledge to work with the SBC in Great Commission partnership;
• show appreciation for Samford University President Emeritus Thomas E. Corts, who passed away in February;
• honor Buster Taylor’s 20th anniversary as executive director of Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center in Talladega; and
• show appreciation for Whitesburg Baptist and Madison Baptist Association for hosting the ABSC annual meeting.
Anyone else planning to submit a resolution is encouraged to do so prior to the resolution committee meeting Nov. 9 in Montgomery.
