Retired Alabama pastor Morris dies at age 76

After 53 years of ministering to Baptists, former Alabama pastor J.B. “Bill” Morris died April 6 from heart complications following a traffic accident. He was 76.

During his years in Baptist work, Morris served as pastor of Grant Baptist Church in Grant, First Baptist Church, Hanceville, and Mount Zion Baptist Church in Huntsville, as well as other churches in Kentucky and Tennessee.

He also served as a trustee with Baptist Hospital in Nashville, as superintendent of Baptist Children’s Home in Franklin, Tenn., and vice mayor of Dayton, Tenn.

“It is a big loss, but we know he’s in a better place,” said his wife, Dot.

Morris, a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, was born in Stevenson and grew up in Brideport. He met and dated Dot at Florence State Teachers College, now the University of North Alabama.

After marrying, the two attended Howard College (now Samford University) and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.

Despite declining health in his later years, at the time of his death, Morris was actively involved in ministering to hospice patients and helping with building projects for a family who needed help with their home.

“He was always interested in what was going on in other people’s lives,” Dot said.

Along with his wife, Morris is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, three sons and daughters-in-law, 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a sister and a nephew.
