Retired Alabama pastor Tuten dies

Retired Alabama Baptist pastor W.C. Tuten died Jan. 19. He was 80 years old.
Tuten’s ministry went full circle, beginning and ending at Bay Springs Baptist Church in Shelby Association. He started his ministry there in 1958.

He went on to serve churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee, then returned to Alabama as pastor of Concord Baptist Church, Calera. He retired from there in 1989.

In 1990, Tuten came out of retirement to again serve his first pastorate, Bay Springs, until health problems forced him to back into retirement in 1992.

Tuten was born in Florence and received a degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. A veteran of World War II, He was shot by a Japanese sniper in the Philippines and survived against long odds.

Tuten is survived by his wife, Wanda; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Cindy Tuten, who serve as International Mission Board medical missionaries in Tanzania, Africa; and three grandchildren.

Tuten’s first wife, Jean, preceded him in death.
