Retired Alabama pastor Clyde Jackson “Jack” Wood died at home in Huntsville Oct. 4. He was 76 years old. Wood, along with his wife, Mary Jo, was a member of Flint River Baptist Church, Hazel Green.
The former Ruhama Baptist Church, Birmingham, licensed Wood to preach in 1950, and in 1954, he was ordained by 66th Street Baptist Church, Birmingham. Wood graduated from Howard College (now Samford University) in 1955. He earned degrees from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary; Long Island University in Brookville, N.Y.; and Vanderbilt University in Nashville.
Wood served as pastor and interim pastor to churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. He also worked for the Home Mission Board (now North American Mission Board) of the Southern Baptist Convention and Madison Baptist Association.
Wood retired in 1984 from the U.S. Army after serving as chaplain for more than 20 years and attaining the rank of colonel. He received many service decorations including the Meritorious Service Medal and the Bronze Star Medal.
Wood is survived by his wife, five children and their spouses, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
