State, international missions advocate Ann Cushing dies at 88

Ann Claire Weed Cushing, wife of retired state missionary Harrell Cushing, died June 12. She was 88.

A Florida native, Ann Cushing graduated from Carson-Newman College (now University) in Jefferson City, Tennessee, and did master’s level work at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, and the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Through the years she was involved in Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) and served as a literacy missions leader for Samford University in Birmingham; a trustee for the North American Mission Board; and a longtime ESL teacher for First Baptist Church, Montgomery, and Montgomery Baptist Association. She helped lead marriage enrichment and prayer retreats and led overseas worship for annual missionary meetings in 16 nations, serving in 62 nations over the course of her life.

Her church recently honored her with a brick on national WMU’s new Walk of Faith.

She is survived by her husband; daughters, Charlotte, Connie and Jama; and six grandchildren. (Grace Thornton)
