Richardson named new Shelby DOM

Hugh Richardon was called Sept. 15 as the new director of missions (DOM) for Shelby Baptist Association.

Richardson, who has served as pastor of First Baptist Church, Lanett, East Liberty Association, for the past two years, will begin his duties as newly-elected DOM Oct. 17 alongside current DOM Charles Stroud, who will retire Dec. 31.

“After approximately nine months of the search process, it was a unanimous call by the messengers,” said Allan Murphy, pastor of North Shelby Baptist Church, Shelby Association, and chairman of the search committee.

“His personality is much like that of our current director of missions – very friendly and open. The transition will be good and easy, and we will be able to build on what we had.”

Richardson, a native of Jefferson County, was baptized at Pineywood Baptist Church, Gardendale, before moving to pursue degrees in ministries outside the state.

He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Southeastern Bible College in Birmingham and a master of divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.

He also earned a doctor of ministries degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C.

Richardson served as a pastor in North Carolina, then came to Forestdale Baptist Church, Birmingham Baptist Association, where he served 12 years before moving to First, Lanett.

He has also been involved in chaplaincy training in hospitals both in North Carolina and Alabama.

He and his wife, Lu, have two grown children.
