Curtis Rockett, 93, taught Sunday School for 60 years, working in Bessemer and Mud Creek Baptist associations. He remained a leader in the church until age 91, when his wife became sick. He was a deacon for 58 years.
Q: What led you to do Sunday School work?
A: The Lord called me to be director of Sunday School when I was 29 years old, and I had never taught Sunday School.
Q: Why did you continue this activity?
A: I loved it. If a person will diligently study their Sunday School lesson, there is no better way to read, study and understand the Bible. Sunday School is the greatest way for reaching people. It is the supplier for new members in the church.
Q: What did you get from it?
A: I got satisfaction from knowing I was working for the Lord and teaching people. You never know what that amounts to.
Q: How do other family members support you?
A: My wife was right beside me. She taught for 60 years, too.
Q: How do you see yourself involved in this in the future?
A: I don’t know if I’ll teach anymore or not. If the situation gets to where I can, I will. Nothing would suit me better than to teach again.
Q: What difference has this made for you?
A: I was a Christian already but I hadn’t done anything. I don’t deserve any credit. The Lord gets the credit. The Holy Spirit does the work, but I’ve enjoyed it every step of the way. Giving it up was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life.
