Rogers, Betsy

Rogers, Betsy

Betsy Rogers is someone you should know because she was named Alabama’s first National Teacher of the Year by President George Bush last April in a White House ceremony.

Q: Why were you named Teacher of the Year?

A: That is very hard to answer, because I just represent many outstanding teachers across America. I was nominated by the teachers of my school- Leeds Elementary. This was the first time my school had ever participated in this program. I was named State Teacher of the Year in May 2002. During my year as State Teacher of the Year, I traveled across the state speaking to various groups.

Q: What do you get from doing these?

A: I love meeting so many outstanding educators across our country. I have gained a wealth of knowledge about our schools, and I know I will return to the classroom a better teacher.

Q: How do your family members support you?

A: They are all very excited about the many opportunities this affords me. My father is often overly proud and, much to my embarrassment, shares my pictures from the White House with everyone he meets.

Q: How will this opportunity affect you in the future?

A: I am told I will be a force to be reckoned with after this year is over. I am not sure about that; however, I will be more knowledgeable and will have the wonderful opportunity to network with many educators and educational organizers. I hope I can help bring Alabama schools up to the standard for all children in our state to attend a school of the highest quality. It is time for Alabama to stand up for all children and for our legacy to be how well we have taken care of our children. Alabama’s future will only be as bright as the quality of our schools.
