Former Alabama Baptist pastor dies at 78

Doug Sager, a Tennessee pastor who formerly served two Alabama churches, died Feb. 24. He was 78.

A native of Midfield, Sager preached his first revival at age 11 and never stopped fulfilling his ministry calling. He earned a degree from Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham then went on to New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

He served as pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, Ensley; Roebuck Park Baptist Church, Birmingham (now NorthPark Baptist, Trussville); and several other churches in Louisiana, Florida and Tennessee. Since retiring four years ago from First Baptist Church, Concord, in Knoxville, Tennessee, he had been preaching at Vonore Baptist Church in Tennessee.

Over the years, Sager also had served in roles with the Southern Baptist Convention, the Tennessee Baptist Convention and the Alabama Baptist Pastors Conference.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Faye; three children; and six grandchildren. (TAB)
