Whether you are a film-festival junkie or a first-timer with a video camera, a teenager or an adult, you can improve your creative skills at The Media Center Video Workshop, hosted by Samford University’s Orlean Bullard Beeson School of Education and Professional Studies.
“It’s not just to teach people how to edit or shoot; it’s about the experience,” said Ed Landers, director of the education and professional studies school’s Media Center.
“Most kids can figure out how to edit and can figure out how to run a camera. But we want to take that and give some focal points and make it an experience instead of just another project. … The experience is where you learn. That’s the fun part.”
The video workshop will provide demonstrations of various levels of video, field and studio production, lighting, editing, audio, graphics and production software and equipment. It will be offered six different weeks 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. on Samford’s campus in Birmingham for ages 13–18 based on students’ skill level:
• June 1–4 — Assistant producer level
• June 8–11 — Producer level
• July 6–9 — Executive producer level
• July 13–16 — Assistant producer level
• July 20–23 — Producer level
• July 27–30 — Executive producer level
“If you sign up for producer level, then you are expected to know some semblance of writing, editing and executing. … The executive group should know how to shoot and have experience with a film festival or two,” Landers said.
A two-week evening workshop will be offered for adults of all skill levels June 8–11 and 15–19, 5–8 p.m.
Jon Clemmensen, professor of journalism and mass communications at Samford, and Christopher Weed, senior editor for i.d.e.a.s. at Disney Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Fla., will lead the workshop with Landers and Jordan Meggs, director of art and media for Samford’s school of education and professional studies. Media Center assistants David Rice and Tyler Harris will help as well.
Sponsored in partnership with The Alabama Baptist, this is a great opportunity for churches, ministries and other organizations to send students and adults in order to “get people where they can do this and it’s not that big of a deal,” Landers said.
“It’s a concept where you can see your dream or vision come to fruition. And whatever it is you want to do, we want you to do it well.”
Seating is available on a limited basis for eight PC users and eight Mac users during each workshop week. Preregister by May 15.
