Elizabeth “Liz” Wells was honored at her retirement reception in Samford University’s Harwell G. Davis University Library in Birmingham on Nov. 7.
Samford employees and former students gathered in the library’s lobby to show their appreciation for her 40 years of service in the Special Collection and Archives department. She was named the processing archivist after serving as chair of the department for 38 years.
She received the Jennings B. Marshall Service Award for significant and sustained service contributions to the university in 2012. In 2013 the Society of Alabama Archivists awarded her with the Marvin Yeomans Whiting Award for significant contributions to the preservation and dissemination of local history in Alabama.
And in April she was presented with the Virginia Hamilton Award by the Alabama Historical Association for her work to make Samford’s archives stronger in Alabama history, Alabama Baptist history and Samford history. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Judson College in Marion, a master’s degree from Auburn University and a master’s degree from the University of Alabama.
