I am grateful to serve in a place where there is one mission — the Great Commission,” said Samford University President Andrew Westmoreland, expressing his gratitude to Alabama Baptists as he presented the university’s annual report to the convention.
Westmoreland announced that 2007 marks 50 years on the current campus in Homewood. In commemoration of the anniversary, he showed a video tracing the history of Samford beginning with its early days as Howard College in Marion.
The Book of Reports details several current construction projects, including what Westmoreland described as “a jewel for the campus,” the new $32 million Pete Hanna Center, which is a multipurpose athletic, fitness and special events facility.
Other projects include new tennis facilities, a new 600-space parking deck and a major expansion/renovation of the university’s heating and cooling system.
A universitywide strategic planning program is under way to assess current and future needs in programming, finances and the physical operation of the campus.
Westmoreland ended the report by looking toward the future. “We sit in the shade of trees that we did not plant. That which we have received, we wish to pass on.” (TAB)
