Samford University’s Student Government Association (SGA) President Rob Howell recognizes that being the top elected student leader at a Christian university offers challenges as well as rewards. “Certain challenges exist that are not present at secular universities,” said Howell, who was elected by vote of the undergraduate student body in April.
“I must consistently balance the nonreligious aspects of student government with the responsibility to maintain the Christ-centered focus that lies at the heart of Samford,” he said. “However, I believe that serving at a Christian university provides me with opportunities that I would not have otherwise. It is fulfilling to have the opportunity to express my Christian faith through my role at the university.
“Because Samford is a Christian university, I can express my faith openly and publicly without ridicule or reprimand,” said Howell, noting that Samford SGA meetings open with prayer, while even “such a simple expression of faith” might be discouraged at a secular university.
Howell, a history and religion double major who spent part of his summer vacation studying for the law school entrance exam, hopes to pursue a joint law/divinity degree after he earns a bachelor’s degree in May. Howell received a top Samford honor in April when he won the Rufus Shelton Award as the male student who has most helped improve campus life and is worthy of special recognition.
A member of First Baptist Church, Haleyville, he has enjoyed attending Shades Crest Baptist Church, Bluff Park, in Birmingham Baptist Association while at Samford. (SU)
