Fifty-nine Samford University students were commissioned for summer missions work during a special service May 6. At least several dozen more will also serve missions areas ranging from international to local, predicts Samford missions coordinator Renee Pitts.
Samford student ministries raised $18, 500 to support the summer workers.
During the service, 31 students were commissioned for international work, 16 for various camps and eight for church work. Four were commissioned for community ministry in New York, San Francisco and Hawaii, and with Sowing Seeds of Hope project in Marion.
The send-off for summer missionaries ends a year during which Samford students engaged in various mission projects. In March, 26 students were involved in spring break missions trips to Perry County and the Texas-Mexico border. Also, Word Players drama group and the Student Ministries Choir participated in a missions trip to Chicago, Ill.
